Our design&build task was the renovation of the facade and the architectural redesign of the interior retail spaces. During the renovation of a house of such character, nearly 100 years old, a lot of ethical and technical decisions have to be made already in the design phase. At decision making moments, we weighed two aspects: if possible, keep the old and renovate it, but if you can't renovate, then remake it in its identical form using the original technique and material. Based on this principle, the house's metal ornaments were remade from titanium zinc sheets based on historical photographs and the remaining original pieces. The old iron-made gutter brackets and flag holders were cleaned by sandblasting and powder-coated. We kept the original casement windows, which were fitted with 10mm insulating glass on the inner sash and replaced the exterior glass sheets with new 4mm float glass. The commercial space was demolished to the structure and its original proportions and openings were restored. A modern underfloor heating system was installed. The unique built-in furniture elements give the space a contemporary character.
